Event Details
Artist and writer Peter Ursem comes back to Shaftesbury with a wide variety of paintings, drawings and original prints.
As an artist, Peter is known for his multicoloured lino prints, but he also works in charcoal and oil paints. The landscape is a main theme, but there are also works incorporating poetry and figurative images.
Peter writes as Petrus Ursem. He recently published ‘The Bigger Picture’, a heartwarming collection of ‘forty friendly fables’ full of wit, reflection and enchantment to tickle the imagination. Earlier he published a trilogy for young adults, also characterised by his vivid experience of landscape, with Dartmoor the backdrop for a thrilling adventure story. (‘The Fortune of the Seventh Stone’, ‘The Truth Teller’, and ‘Black as Ink’).
Peter grew up in the Netherlands where he graduated in literature from the University in Utrecht and in drawing, painting and printmaking from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. He now has his studio in the Tamar Valley. In 1995 he was awarded a ‘Debut’ award from The Hague Arts Centre ‘Stroom’, and in the UK a series of Arts Council awards, including ‘Reflections, Woodcuts of the River Stour’ (2001) and ‘Intimate Space, Artist Face’ (2006). In 2010 he had a major solo show in Dorset County Museum (‘Dorset Footprint’) and in 2017 at Plymouth College of Arts (‘As the River Flows’).
Meet the Artist: During this exhibition, every morning at 11am, Peter will read one of his fables from ‘The Bigger Picture’ and be available to chat about his work and his approaches to art and writing.
For more information you can also visit Peter’s websites – www.peterursem.co.uk (art) www.petrus-ursem.co.uk (writing).

This joint exhibition brings together the unique visions of two artists deeply inspired by the natural world.
Claire Godfree, a multi-disciplinary artist, delves into the rich tapestry of British folklore through an evocative exploration of birds. Her works weave myth and nature, reflecting the symbolic significance of birds in British storytelling traditions.
Complementing this, ceramic artist Ruth Readman presents her sculptural works inspired by the rugged beauty of the Dorset landscape. Her ceramics capture the textures, forms, and quiet moods of the countryside, offering a tactile connection to the region’s timeless beauty.
Together, the exhibition invites viewers to experience the intersection of myth, nature and place, with each artist bringing her own narrative to life through her chosen medium.
Open 10am to 4pm daily. Free admission.
