We stage a core of four shows a year, from a regular winter pantomime in January, a spring play, a summer show and an autumn play, along with other performance opportunities along the way. We also run three thriving Youth Theatre groups for ages 7-20 yrs old.
Whether you’re drawn to the allure of the spotlight, the creative pull of behind-the-scenes magic, or the intricacy of scriptwriting, there’s a role for everyone in the world of music and drama. From acting and directing to set design, lighting, costume creation, and more, Shaftesbury Arts Centre Theatre Company productions are a vibrant tapestry of talents that come together to tell compelling stories. No matter your experience level or area of interest, there are numerous ways to get involved.

Set against the harsh backdrop of the Great Depression, Of Mice and Men is the story of George and Lennie, two friends with a simple dream: to own a farm and live off the fat of the land. There are times, though, when sharp witted George feels the burden of looking after Lennie, while gentle giant Lennie doesn’t realise his own strength… As they drift from job to job, trouble’s never far away, and before long it’’s time to move on again. When the pair get work in Soledad, California, however, the dream looks set to become a reality. But a tragic turn of events threatens to destroy George and Lennie’s friendship and leaves George faced with an impossible choice.

Nigel has had an extensive career spanning five decades. He has worked with Steven Berkoff, performed a leading role in London’s West End in The Fifteen Streets as well as many of the regional theatres in the UK. Internationally Nigel has performed in the USA and all over Europe and Asia.in over 100 plays. Founder member of The Cherub Theatre and Medieval Players Theatre companies, first performing in Edinburgh at the Fringe in The Two Noble Kinsmen in 1979. .Well known on TV for his appearance in ‘Dr Who’. Grange Hill, as well as many of the UK’s popular programmes. Together with his Fringe Management partner Michael Blaha they produced the first Pantomime in Los Angeles starring Zsa Zsa Gabor in 1993. Last seen in Doha as Sherlock Holmes The Last Act which has since being touring the UK and will be part of the Cunard programme in 2026 on The Queen Mary 2.

Since graduating from The Arts Educational Schools in 1984, Michael has appeared in countless theatre productions over the years. Most notably as John Merrick in ‘The Elephant Man’, Dr Frankenstein in ‘Frankenstein’ Puck in ‘A Midsummer Nights Dream, Mercutio in ‘Romeo and Juliet, Dr Watson in ‘The Return of Sherlock Holmes and of course George in Of Mice and Men. He has appeared in several TV and Films including ‘Coronation Street’ Michael is regular, year round cold water swimmer in the Hampstead ponds in London and featured in the recent documentary ‘The Ponds’

“There’s something of the proverbial elder statesman about Peter Knight, in terms of his place in music, which cannot be overstated. It’s not just in the quality of his playing…there’s a focus on the sheer inventiveness of Peter’s playing, in the adventurous arrangements he shares with his collaborators, and in his musical leadership”
In the wake of his departure from Steeleye Span, fiddle player Peter Knight has turned his full attention to his trio Gigspanner, and in the process established their reputation as one of the most genuinely ground-breaking forces on the British folk scene, inspiring Maverick magazine to write “Gigspanner are pushing at the boundaries, expanding the possibilities and in the process making some of the most beautiful music the genre has to offer”

“Since his inaugural performance with the fledgling Steeleye Span in 1970, Peter Knight has been a mainstay of the British folk scene. Never one to rest on his laurels, Peter has carved a reputation as a relentlessly questing musician “as mercurial as quicksilver”, and it is never quite so apparent as in his work with the various Gigspanner line-ups.”
The Gigspanner Trio is the beating heart from which all other lineups have evolved, and the one most loved by many for the intimacy and joy manifest in their virtuosic performances. Audiences revel in the opportunity to witness ‘up close and personal’ the almost telepathic communication that exists between Peter, guitarist Roger Flack and hand percussionist, Sacha Trochet.
This concert is an extra special one as the Trio will be showcasing selected pieces from their long waited new album.
Described by Folk Radio UK as one of the “most quietly brilliant sets of musicians in the folk world and beyond”, they take self-penned material along with music rooted in the British Isles and beyond, and with the flick of a bow, a finely chosen chord or slip of a beat, produce richly atmospheric arrangements “with notes seemingly plucked from the stars and rhythms from the equator” (Spiral Earth).

Simon Eeles pottery is an exquisite blend of traditional techniques and vibrant Raku ceramics. The paintings of Laurence Belbin show his obsession for the West Country landscape. Rolling hills and patchwork fields ar manipulated to create the sensation of steep valleys and coombes which typify the landscape in which he works. Both fired up by colour, together they have worked to make this an exhibition of colourful line and design. Each in their differing mediums but with the common theme of colour and passion producing individual works of art. Between them they have at least 99 years experience.

The Shaftesbury Arts Centre Theatre Company is a dynamic and creative group that brings amateur dramatic theatre to life at Shaftesbury Arts Centre.
We stage a core of four shows a year, from a regular winter pantomime in January, a spring play, a summer show and an autumn play, along with other performance opportunities along the way. We also run three thriving Youth Theatre groups for ages 7-20 yrs old.

Shaftesbury Theatre Company and Back Room Theatre presents The Shaftesbury New Writing Scratch Festival.
A Scratch Festival is where new plays meet an audience for the first time. Writers will see their work performed as script-in-hand pieces, hear constructive feedback from experienced theatre practitioners, and discover how a real audience responds to their work.
The Festival will build on the success of the Back Room Theatre Scratch Nights whilst creating a unique event for Shaftesbury Arts Centre that encourages new writing and provides a genuine opportunity for scripts to progress from an early idea to a fully realised production.
There will be two showcases:
Youth New Writing Scratch Festival (3pm-5pm)
Adult New Writing Scratch Festival (7pm-10pm)
Up to six pieces will be selected for each showcase.
The Development Award
The winner of this award, selected by Shaftesbury Arts Centre and Back Room Theatre, will have the opportunity to work with both organisations to develop and edit their script into a full-length play.
Festival Support
Scripts selected for the festival will benefit from basic technical support to help bring each piece to life on stage.

Rolling hills and patchwork fields ar manipulated to create the sensation of steep valleys and coombes which typify the landscape in which he works. Both fired up by colour, together they have worked to make this an exhibition of colourful line and design. Each in their differing mediums but with the common theme of colour and passion producing individual works of art. Between them they have at least 99 years experience.

Oh no, he hasn’t…! The devious Baron Blackheart has been up to no good, stealing magical items from some of the most beloved pantomimes. Without them, the magic is fading, and the world of pantomime will never be the same again!
But all is not lost! With the help of the fabulous Dame Dolly, her son Bobby, the theatre caretaker Fred, and one very important ingredient — YOU, the audience — we must recover the missing treasures before time runs out.
Can our unlikely heroes outwit the wicked Baron Blackheart? Will the magic be restored? And will everything go according to plan? Well, this is pantomime… so what could possibly go wrong?!

But all is not lost! With the help of the fabulous Dame Dolly, her son Bobby, the theatre caretaker Fred, and one very important ingredient — YOU, the audience — we must recover the missing treasures before time runs out.

Everyone has a story. Your stories matter. Keith Alessi was neither a performer nor a musician before taking to the stage. He was an accountant and corporate CEO! He now shares his unconventional true story of overcoming great obstacles including cancer and how the healing power of music brought him back home to himself.
The grassroots sound of the banjo lures you in and brings you back to a simpler time in life, as Keith takes you on the journey of his story. This show has been highly awarded and reviewed while touring internationally and has profoundly affected audiences everywhere. Themes of forgiveness and the importance of pursuing your passions resonate throughout.
The variety of banjos that join him on stage are all characters and played important roles in his journey.
This is more than a show, it’s a cause. Keith has never accepted any form of remuneration for his performances, instead choosing to donate it to local charities and to Theatres in support of Artist development. As of June 2026 we have raised over $1.3 Million Dollars (CAD) for these causes.

Virtually everybody of a certain age has read an Enid Blyton book. She was loved by children (except her younger daughter who hated her) but vilified by the BBC, teachers, critics and librarians.
She sold more than 600 million books, despite all her work being banned by the BBC and many libraries and schools for more than thirty years. She was accused of being a racist and of using such limited vocabulary that it actually hindered children’s reading progress. Her love-life was interesting and she had numerous affairs including with her children’s nanny. She enjoyed playing golf so much that she bought a golf course near Swanage. She died of Alzheimer’s in 1968 aged 71, mourned by millions of readers all over the world.
Liz Grand (previous shows ‘The Second Best Bed’, ‘Where Is Mrs. Christie?’ and ‘Mrs. Churchill – My life With Winston’) plays this remarkable and controversial woman and brings you her story.

The Shaftesbury Arts Centre Theatre Company is a dynamic and creative group that brings amateur dramatic theatre to life at Shaftesbury Arts Centre.
We stage a core of four shows a year, from a regular winter pantomime in January, a spring play, a summer show and an autumn play, along with other performance opportunities along the way. We also run three thriving Youth Theatre groups for ages 7-20 yrs old.
Whether you’re drawn to the allure of the spotlight, the creative pull of behind-the-scenes magic, or the intricacy of scriptwriting, there’s a role for everyone in the world of music and drama. From acting and directing to set design, lighting, costume creation, and more, Shaftesbury Arts Centre Theatre Company productions are a vibrant tapestry of talents that come together to tell compelling stories. No matter your experience level or area of interest, there are numerous ways to get involved.

The Theatre Company meets Tuesday and Thursday evenings during rehearsals for shows, from 7.30pm in the Arts Centre. Age restriction is 9+ for our main shows and 7+ for Youth Theatre.
