Described by Folk Radio UK as one of the “most quietly brilliant sets of musicians in the folk world and beyond”, The Gigspanner Trio take to the stage at Shaftesbury Arts Centre.
Since his inaugural performance with the fledgling Steeleye Span in 1970, Peter Knight has been a mainstay of the British folk scene.cNever one to rest on his laurels, Peter has carved a reputation as a relentlessly questing musician, and it is never quite so apparent as in his work with the various Gigspanner line-ups.
“Gigspanner are pushing at the boundaries, and in the process are making some of the most beautiful music the genre has to offer” ☆☆☆☆☆ Maverick Magazine
In the wake of his departure from Steeleye Span, Peter turned his full attention to the Gigspanner Trio and established their reputation as one of the most genuinely ground-breaking forces on the British folk scene,
“There’s something of the proverbial elder statesman about Peter Knight, in terms of his place in music, which cannot be overstated. It’s not just in the quality of his playing…there’s a focus on the sheer inventiveness of Peter’s playing, in the adventurous arrangements he shares with his collaborators, and in his musical leadership” Northern Sky Magazine Magazine

All of our classes at Shaftesbury Arts Centre are non-syllabus based and work well as stand-alone classes or alongside any syllabus classes already being attended. Within these classes, students will learn a variety of rhythms and how to apply those to the sounds they make with their feet and hands. As they develop they will learn how to develop into a percussionist creating their own music with their feet.
Within each lesson, students learn a variety of tap techniques and develop them into exercises, drills and combinations over each term. Not only are these classes great fun, but they also work on developing coordination, posture and stance, help with brain training and muscle memory. A wonderful place to meet new people and make new friends.

I have worked as an abstract painter since the early 1970’s and my work is about tonal and colour harmonies, discords and rhythms.
I have used the stripe in my paintings since the late 70’s, having been strongly influenced by Bridget Riley and Gene Davis amongst others. A break from the stripe format occurred in the mid 80’s when my work became more expressive only to return to it in order to fulfil a commission. From this time the greys were dropped for full but limited colour.
Technology also has place on my recent development, hence the use of large areas of extremely deep black.

Erica is an ISTD-registered member with a Level 4 Diploma in Dance Education (DDE), has dance teachers’ insurance with G Gallagher and is DBS checked.
Classes can be joined on a pay-as-you-go basis or by monthly standing order. For further details about the classes, please either visit our website at www.elevatedtapcompany.co.uk or email Erica at elevatedtapcompany@gmail.com.

Shaftesbury Abbey is delighted to welcome acclaimed garden historian, Caroline Holmes to give a richly illustrated lecture on The Medieval Garden.
Apart from contemporary prose and poetry, medieval illuminated manuscripts and tapestries are important reference sources for medieval gardens and their plants. We explore their use and evolution in the period 410–1485 – from monastic enclosure to royal hunting park and the desire for an earthly paradise both as a Christian and romantic metaphor. Discover the development of simple, monastic, self-sufficient food, medicinal and sacristan plots into elaborate ecclesiastical palace and abbey gardens, not forgetting the heavily defended castles with their survival crops and manors with walled gardens relishing the wafting scents from plantings below status rooms.
Caroline Holmes is an international lecturer, author and consultant designer. As a garden historian she researches ancient, modern and contemporary gardens, academic but not dry, informative and entertaining, her lectures explore people, plants and places delving into the myriad ways they have historically shaped their landscapes. Academic tutor and Course Director for the University of Cambridge ICE, lecturer for The Arts Society, she has spoken or researched on every continent except Antarctica. Her 12th book ‘Where the Wildness Pleases – The English Garden Celebrated’ was published in July 2021.
Tickets: £15. Friends of Shaftesbury Abbey £12.

Phantasia are a dynamic and innovative music group specialising in art and folk music from the 17th to 19th centuries, played on period instruments.
The members of Phantasia are internationally known and respected and have played/sang with many of the leading groups in their field all around the world, and have also had online success with videos gaining millions of views and going viral multiple times. Engaging with the audience is very important to Phantasia and performances always include explanations of the music and instruments being played.
The Albion’s Delight tour features a new and unique programme, focusing on British music at two different points in time – the late 18th century and early 21st century. Art and folk music from Georgian Britain (including songs from Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens and a selection of Haydn’s wonderful Scottish and Welsh folksong arrangements) transitions to contemporary music inspired by landscapes and places of southern England, played on the same historical instruments.
This concert features a wider variety of music than you would normally hear in one programme, and will also appeal to both classical and folk music lovers. Phantasia are delighted to work with soprano Angela Hicks for this project, a star of the early music world who has an incredible clear voice perfectly suited to this music. She is also an experienced folk singer.
Tickets: £17. Members & Friends £15.

Shaftesbury Arts Centre’s Music and Drama Group are delighted to be able to present this fantastic show as their summer musical this year.
With the book, originally by HG Wells, updated for the stage by Julian Fellows and the stage version rearranged by Cameron Macintosh, what could be more joyous?
Kipps is an orphan working as a draper’s assistant in Folkestone, for the strict owner Mr Shalford. Kipps is charming and hard working but also enjoys his fun and dreams of happiness with enough money to marry his childhood sweetheart Ann Pornick. When he unexpectedly comes into money he attempts to better himself rather disastrously, meeting and falling for the well born Helen Walsingham.
Between Ann and Helen, Arthur Kipps doesn’t know which way to turn. How will he find himself again after such a confusing passage in his life? The show has some memorable and toe tapping songs in it such as ‘Pick Out a Simple Tune’, ‘If The Rain’s Gotta Fall’, ‘Half a Sixpence’ and of course ‘Flash Bang Wallop’.
What a better way to spend a Summer evening? Come and have a Flash, Bang, Wallop of a time!

Join us for a hilariously twisted, “unreasonable, unseasonable and unsuitable for brats” sleigh ride.
A legendary figure is booked in for some way out-of-season rehab. Is he the real thing or another otherwise unemployed actor between Santa gigs? That’s the set up for a brand-new character stand-up by the critically acclaimed writer and performer Terry Victor.
You can expect a stockingful of zeitgeist-rattling, award-winning entertainment with the world’s most recognisable stand-up: a jolly, white-bearded, fat man who has definitely seen the Grotto from the dark side. Now Santa is tottering in stilettos, more burley than burlesque, all the while Xmas rapping as the Ho Ho Ho Sisters! – it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas will never be the same again…

Shaftesbury Arts Centre is launching a new, weekend-long competitive festival for instrumental and vocal performers in two groupings – 4 to 11 years (Junior) and 12 to 18 years (Senior).
The event will take place in Shaftesbury Arts Centre and, the following Saturday afternoon, there will be a Winners’ Concert in the Theatre.
If you have students – individual or in groups, for example choirs – who may be interested in participating, please register the interest with approximate numbers, instruments, standard and age range. Further, if you cannot enter students but would like to help with organising or adjudicating, kindly let us know that.
An entry fee of £5 for juniors and £10 for seniors is being suggested, and all competitors will receive helpful and positive feedback, with the winners, chosen on merit and/or effort, having the opportunity to play in the concert.
The project is intended to motivate and encourage young players, singers and actors, and we hope very much to enlist your support for it.
Please register your interest by emailing SYPF@shaftesburyartscentre.org.uk by May 10th. All comments and suggestions welcome! We are starting small but hope to grow!
Final details will be given in due course, once we know the level of interest.

The Music and Drama Group is a dynamic and creative group that brings amateur dramatic theatre to life at Shaftesbury Arts Centre.
We stage a core of four shows a year, from a regular winter pantomime in January, a spring play, a summer show and an autumn play, along with other performance opportunities along the way. We also run three thriving Youth Theatre groups for ages 7-20 yrs old.
Whether you’re drawn to the allure of the spotlight, the creative pull of behind-the-scenes magic, or the intricacy of scriptwriting, there’s a role for everyone in the world of Music and Drama. From acting and directing to set design, lighting, costume creation, and more, Shaftesbury Arts Centre productions are a vibrant tapestry of talents that come together to tell compelling stories. No matter your experience level or area of interest, there are numerous ways to get involved.
Dive in, learn, collaborate, and become a part of our ever-growing theatrical family.
Our aim is to produce high quality and enjoyable theatre experiences in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
