In Elizabethan England, young playwright William Shakespeare struggles with writer’s block while working on his latest play.

He finds inspiration and romance in the enigmatic Viola de Lesseps, who poses as a man to perform on stage. Their forbidden love affair ultimately inspires Shakespeare to write his masterpiece, Romeo and Juliet.
