Shaftesbury Arts Centre’s Music and Drama Group presents the gripping drama about Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in Britain.
Ruth Ellis is no fictional character. She was flesh-and-blood and her story is true.
Ruth Ellis has become a symbol of criminal injustice, but in The Thrill of Love she is neither victim, villain or hero. The play seeks to understand more about a complex, enigmatic young woman and the life she lived.
With Blakely, an off-stage character, the story focuses on Ruth and her fellow hostesses. They would have known her better than anyone yet they are all but silent in the official records. By finding their voice, we may hear Ruth’s, too. Exactly what drove her out with a gun on Easter Sunday 1955 can never fully be known but we still have much to learn from the question.
Warning: This show contains bright flashing lights and is not suitable for those with light sensitive conditions such as epilepsy. We would like to advise that The Thrill of Love is not suitable for under 14’s.
Tickets: £12.50. Friends and Members £10.
