Event Details

Malmesbury Abbey was, for many centuries, one of the great Benedictine monasteries of the West Country. A fragment of the abbey survives today as the parish church of the town.

The monastery was closely associated in Anglo-Saxon times with the royal house of Wessex. It produced two of the most important writers of the Middle Ages: St Aldhelm and William of Malmesbury.

In this talk Tony McAleavy will share the results of a decade of archival research into this important institution, emphasising both the remarkable cultural achievements of some monks and the extremely scandalous lives of others.

Tony McAleavy studied history at Oxford. He is the research director of an education charity. His book, The Last Witch Craze, was published in June 2022.

Tickets: £12. Friends of Shaftesbury Abbey £10.
