The Film Society is delighted to bring you two classic films starring Jean-Paul Belmondo.
A key face of the ‘Nouvelle Vague’ and one of France’s most famous actors, he made the transition from stage to screen in the mid-fifties. With his inimitable, roguish smile and witty yet moody performances, he went on to star in some of the defining movies of the era, being directed by Chabrol, De Sica, Truffaut, Melville, Resnais, Becker, Lelouch, Ophuls, Clement and Lautner.
The programme is as follows:
3pm – A Bout de Souffle (15) 1960
This film is the epitome of cinematic cool. A fast tale of a young man on the run in Paris at the end of the 50s. It shook up the film world on its release and has made a lasting impression on cinema history.
4.40pm – Tea and cakes
5.15pm – Pierrot le Fou (15 ) 1965
Loosely based on Lionel White’s novel Obsession, tired of his bourgeois life, Ferdinand Griffon leaves his wife and elopes with his former babysitter Marianne. When a dead body is found in Marianne’s apartment, the two lovers flee to the South of France in a futile bid to escape Marianne’s past.
Programme ends at 7pm.
